Projects in New Mexico Zuni, a small pueblo community nestled in the western hills of New Mexico, has public schools serving an almost 100-percent Native American population. The two major industries of the area are tourism and native crafts. The Zuni Public School District is known statewide for innovative educational programs. It believes in supporting technological uses that help students negotiate the technical world. The A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center will partner with the Zuni public schools. Here is an example of student work at Zuni Middle School. Gadsden is far south and its Hispanic population is predominant. Community members are invited to take part in after-school and evening training sessions as well as to use the Gadsen Independent School District's technology resources to further their own academic and professional goals. Once parents complete basic training, their children in school can check out equipment for overnight home use, thus allowing increased access to technology resources by the entire community. West Las Vegas, in the north central mountain region, has a primarily Hispanic population. It is one of New Mexico’s largest school districts, covering 3,065 square miles but with a student population of only 2,080, 94 percent of whom qualify for free or reduced lunches. Students can check out laptops, thus continuing academic activities past the regular school day. |
